MPH Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Anne Jones, Cornell Health Medical Services Director

Dr. Anne Jones

Dr. Anne Jones, the medical services director of Cornell Health spoke at the MPH seminar class on “Zen and the Art of Medical Directing.” Dr. Jones has a unique story, obtaining her Master of Public Health degree after her Degree in Osteopathic Medicine because she realized a need to understand the context surrounding her patients’ medical issues. She didn’t enjoy helping a patient with a medical issue knowing that their circumstances at home would prevent the issue from truly going away.

Dr. Jones emphasized that to her the most dangerous intersection was between clinical medicine and public health. Cornell Health practices the “Quadruple Aim” which includes population health, experience of care, per capita cost, and readiness. This model expands on the Triple Aim Model to include the community partners and organizations, and public health policy which all help accomplish the patient’s care.

In her last few minutes, Dr. Jones brought up tensegrity. Tensegrity is a combination of the words integrity and strength, and describes complex structures that need that tension to hold them together. It has been used to describe the human body, and Dr. Jones believes it can be translated to the intersection of public health and clinical medicine.
