In grade school we read Homer’s Odyssey and my teacher defined “Odyssey as a never ending adventure”. I immediately related Odyssey to growing up racing sled dogs. It was always an adventure including epic tails of training, racing, and traveling with Alaskan sled dogs. Often humorous and always memorable escapades, I eventually named my kennel “Odyssey Racing Team”.
Over the years and through the development of my career, my research has lead me on a new Odyssey. I have been across the U.S., particularly throughout Alaska, sampling Canada geese, caribou, humpback whales, and salmon.
Most recently, livestock research has taken me to Africa visiting Ethiopia, Uganda, and Kenya. Significantly different weather and culture but the villages and people are always welcoming and the animals provide the common ground.
In the end, it’s still a never ending adventure that I look forward to sharing with my students and everyone else interested. Plus, it sounds a bit more exciting than the “Huson Lab”!
