Seeding Rates for Winter Wheat
USDA NASS NY’s September 27 report is showing that 34% of the wheat has been planted. This is right at the five-year average. Seeding rates should increase as the season gets later and should be adjusted based on soil conditions (See chart). Under average conditions, we are right around 1.6 million live seeds/acre. Seeds should be drilled 1-1.5 inches deep for good emergence. See examples below on how to calculate seeding rates per acre.
Live seed % = Recommended rate / Percentage of live seed = Rate/acre
Example: 1,450,000 seeds / .90 live seeds = 1.61 million seeds/acre
To figure out how many pounds per acre, use the following formula.
Seeds per acre / # seeds/lb. = lb./acre Example: 1,610,000 / 13,000 = 123.8 lb./acre
Herbicide Resistant Weed Control Virtual Field Day on 10/21/20
This program was supposed to be a live tour this summer in Waterloo but instead we made a narrated video of the results in the corn and soybean plots. Join us on a virtual walking tour of 16 different pre- and post-emergence treatments in soybean and 10 different treatments and combinations in corn. See how treatments did on our target weed – Waterhemp. For herbicides to be an effective tool in weed management, we have to know what chemistries & application timings are most effective against these resistant weeds.
Registration is REQUIRED! Register online through our website. The program will be held through zoom on October 21 from 11am to 1pm. This program is free and 2 DEC credits are available. Once you are registered, you will receive information about how to download Zoom on a device with internet access, a link to the program on Zoom and requirements for receiving the DEC credits.
