The US Drought monitor has expanded the yellow abnormally dry east into western Wayne County and south into all of Wyoming and the very top of Livingston and Ontario. I can’t believe we will not have some areas of D1 (moderate drought) with the report on Thursday. It has been brutal this last week! Hoping that some of us catch some rain on Wednesday.

Results of the 2025 DTN Digital Corn Yield Tour
Since we do not have a NY weekly update from USDA, this is as close as we have so far. USDA is predicting 181.5 bu/a right now for a US corn yield estimate. It looks like anything from 100 to 200 bushels predicted across the counties in NWNY.

NY Corn and Soybean Contests Deadline is this Friday, August 15!
There are only 2 days left to sign up for one or both yield contests. There are not many entries!!! I know it is very dry in some of our western counties, but I think there is a sleeper field in there somewhere in the south. Areas of the Finger Lakes region, particularly Eastern Wayne County, look good. Let’s represent NWNY!!!

Tar Spot Update
Livingston county is currently the only positive spot for tar spot right now. Those have been in low lying areas that have been getting fog in the morning. Those fields were also positive for gray leaf spot and Northern corn leaf blight and were recommended to be sprayed. This is the week last year that we started to find tar spot. Most of our region is severely dry and I do not expect to see it until we get some cooler temperatures and some rain. We have a lot of late planted corn acres, so we are not out of the woods yet. Below is the current tar spot map.

Next report will be August 20.
