African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious foreign animal disease that affects swine of any breed and age. While this disease has stayed out of the United States and Western Hemisphere for over 40 years, recently it has been identified in the Dominic Republic and Haiti. Both countries are being monitored closely for the potential spread of the disease. New York has a responsibility to be on the frontline when it comes to managing and abating ASF.
To educate and inform NYS farmers, Cornell Cooperative Extension recently hosted a webinar with Dr. Eireann Collins, Veterinarian with NYS Dept. of Ag & Markets. The recording of this short webinar (24 minutes) is available to view on the NWNY Team’s YouTube page and provides an overview of the disease and risks to swine production in the state. Enhanced biosecurity is critical.
