Summer Funding

Summer Funding Requests

The Graduate Field of Natural Resources and the Environment has limited funds to provide summer stipends for graduate students.   In recent years, the field has been able to fulfill half of the minimum summer university fellowship stipend for a limited number of graduate students with insufficient other sources of summer support.  Students receiving support are required to have matching funds for the other half of their summer stipend from one of the following two sources:  1) funds provided by their faculty advisor, or 2) funds provided directly to the student for the purpose of supporting their summer research.  Available summer funds will be awarded up to the limit of funds available to the graduate field for this purpose.

*There is no guarantee that the field will be able to continue to provide matching funds for summer support.  The field strongly encourages faculty to plan accordingly in supporting students at the full summer GRA Stipend rateThe full summer GRA stipend rate for Summer 2023 (5/21/2023-8/20/2023) is $10,029.

In years when funds are available, the Field of Natural Resources and the Environment will use the following criteria for awarding summer funding:

  • Allocation of field summer support will be based on: need, merit, and demonstrated progress in the student’s graduate studies, as well as demonstrated student and faculty initiative to secure funding.
  • An updated annual progress review (see #3 below) will be used in reviewing qualifications for summer funding requests.

To apply for available funds, submit the following to the GFA, nregrad@cornell.edu by March 15.  (Note: these materials should not be sent to the DGS):

1) An account number from the graduate advisor for the matching funds.  If the account number is not yet available, written confirmation from the sponsor confirming the award.

2) Summer research plans, indicating how the availability of summer funding support will support your degree progress;

3) Indication that you have a completed Graduate Student Annual Progress Review for the current academic year.  You are not required to attach a report, Shane will verify this information and reach out to you and your advisor if it is missing.

Summer funding decisions are typically announced no later than April 30.   The summer university fellowship stipend rate (minimum) for 2022-2023 is $6,339.   The field will be using a minimum of $6,839 for Summer 2023.
