Information about Ag and Markets vote to generate industry funding for Research

At the November 27 NNYGGA meeting in Watertown,  Phil Randazzo, board member of  the NY Wine and Grape Foundation, started a discussion of the ‘Grape Research and Development Order’, that would generate funds from grape sales (1/2 of 1% of farm-gate value of the grapes) to wineries and juice processors to support research relevant to the Industry.  Last year, the industry vote on the research order did not pass by a very narrow margin.  Industry representatives want to revisit the issue and bring it to another vote at some unspecified time in the future.

In 2012, I interviewed Branchport grower and then chair of the NYS Wine and Grape Foundation about what the R&D order entailed and what it would support.   Here is a link to that article, which appeared in the August 12 issue of Appellation Cornell:

Industry Petitions New York Ag & Markets for Grape Research and Development Order

I hope this will provide NNY Grape Growers with some additional information about what this R&D order is, and how it would work.  Please keep in mind that if and when it is resubmitted there might be changes from what Jim Bedient described in this article.
