J. Forrest Meekins

J. Forrest Meekins

Lab Manager

Forrest graduated from the College of William and Mary with a BS in Biology and Psychology and completed her PhD in Environmental and Plant Biology at Ohio University. Her previous research involved the invasive biennial garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). She was an assistant to the greenhouse manager and to the biology storeroom manager at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, then moved to Elmira, NY. She worked at Elmira College as a greenhouse manager, adjunct professor of biology, and general biology/botany lab coordinator. She then worked in the medical lab at Guthrie, Sayre. She joined the Nelson lab in 2024. She enjoys gardening, hiking, trying new restaurants, and travel and can occasionally be seen flashing a Vulcan salute at a Star Trek convention.

Krisztina Mosdossy

Krisztina Mosdossy

Postdoctoral Associate

Krisztina is a soil ecologist researching the circular bionutrient economy as a way to reimagine the food system as one that does not rely on fossil fuels or create waste, but values nutrients from excreta that would otherwise pollute ecosystems and waterways. Krisztina weaves her passion for invertebrates, fungi and plants with the use of nutrients that every human produces in their urine as a means to reconnect people to nature. She has experienced the positive effects that humans can have on the Earth, specifically through the use of urine as fertilizer, a millenia-old practice, and finds this important to emphasize in contrast to the common narrative that humans only have negative impacts on Earth systems.

Krisztina joined the Nelson Lab in October 2023 after finishing her Ph.D. in soil ecology at McGill University, Canada. She completed a Master’s degree in Primatology at the University of Calgary studying insectivory of white-faced capuchins in Costa Rica after her Zoology degree at the University of Guelph.

In Krisztina’s research, she prioritizes ways that reciprocate rather than purely extract. Drawing on the teachings of food and medicine growers around the world that she gleaned from her life-long travels, she gardens following permaculture and biodynamic principles to make food and medicine for family and friends while giving back to the soil and local communities. She fulfills this in part by mentoring students and being a student herself of the Kanien’keha language and The Great Law of Peace with a special interest in ethnopedology.

Lucina Li

Lucina Li

Postdoctoral Associate

Lucinda Li is a Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell University, School of Integrative Plant Science. She received her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan. Her current research is focused on closing nutrient loops by processing nutrient-rich waste into agricultural commodities.

Whitman Barrett

Jensen Njagi

Jensen Njagi

Undergraduate Researcher

Jensen Njagi is a current Undergraduate student at Cornell University CALS as a Global Development major, with minors in Global Health and Business. He grew up in Mwea, Central Kenya where he developed an interest in food systems, and global health. He joined the Nelson Lab in the spring of 2023 and has since aided in field and lab work, including collecting data, setting up, and maintaining experiments. Currently in the Nelson Lab, he is working under Krisztina Mosdossy to identify microarthropods (quantity/distribution) in different growing media (soil and organic residues) to understand how they are affected by the nutritional ecology of these media. They are also interested in understanding how different amendments such as biochar, and fertilizers such as urine, and synthetic fertilizers could affect microarthropods. Outside of the lab, Jensen enjoys reading biographies and running.

Earl Gocking

Earl Gocking

Undergraduate Researcher

Earl is an undergraduate with a background is in Food Science and Human Nutrition. He is currently involved in development of methods for nutrient recovery from human excreta fertilizers and crop nutrient analysis.

Alice Daudi

Alice Daudi

Undergraduate Researcher

My name is Alice and I’m a junior from Tanzania pursing my studies in biological sciences. Since joining the lab in September 2023, I have been passionately involved in contributing to the development and documentation of assay methods. My dedication stems from a profound appreciation for the distinctive opportunities inherent in agriculture and food systems across East Arica. As I continue to delve deeper into my research, I am committed to exploring innovative solutions that can positively impact our region’s agricultural practices and food security.

Aiden also plays the bass guitar and enjoys making  experimental music.

Schuyler DuPont

Schuyler DuPont

Undergraduate Researcher

I am studying biological sciences in CALS and graduating in 2025. I joined the lab because I am interested in investigating the organic underutilized resources used to enhance agricultural production to support food security and facilitate waste reduction. In my free time, I enjoy hiking and exploring restaurants in Ithaca, knitting, baking, and golfing!

Harry Yi

Harry Yi

Undergraduate Researcher

I am studying environment & sustainability and biological science as my double majors in CALS. I joined this lab because through my summer program working here, I explored my passion about running experiments, and I intend to further study Biochemistry after graduation. I am expected to graduate in 2027. In the upcoming semester, I will be working with the reactor experiments and helping with pH analysis on leachate samples. In my free time, I enjoying playing soccer, basketball, and ping pong with my friends.

Adrián Cardona

Adrián Cardona

Undergraduate Researcher

Adrián is a third year Environmental Engineering student from Costa Rica joining the lab Fall 2024. He is interested in the processes that can be implemented at various scales to minimize wastes and resource loss throughout waste treatment processes. Coming from Costa Rica, Adrián is interested in the intersection between Environmental Engineering and agriculture, touching on subjects such as land application of biosolids and soil amendments to improve agricultural processes and their sustainability.

Bethany Gorman

Bethany Gorman

Undergraduate Researcher

I am currently in Global Development and class of 2028. I joined this lab to really dive into bio nutrient circularity and to research the many nuances of soil health for farmers globally. Outside of the lab, I enjoy figure skating, reading books, and going to the beach!

Isabel Gallegos

Isabel Gallegos

Undergraduate Researcher

Isabel is a first-year student at Cornell University studying Global Development with a planned concentration in Agriculture and Food Systems. She is most passionate about leveraging research and outreach to improve livelihoods and promote sustainable development. Isabel joined the lab in the fall of 2024 with the goals of investigating the use of Organic Underutilized Resources in food production, as well as the implementation of practical solutions that address complex issues within the food system.
