Make Way for Latinx in Media: We’re Here to Stay

Daniela Arredondo-Sanchez and Maribel Alley

Our project critically examines the pervasive stereotypes affecting the Latinx community in media, challenging misconceptions like gang affiliations and hypersexualization. We delve into the notion of “Latinx coded” characters, discussing the harmful impact of such one-dimensional portrayals. Addressing stereotypes from ‘spicy sexy’ to ‘La Toxica,’ we aim to dismantle these limiting archetypes.  However, we mainly explore recent positive shifts, spotlighting increased representation, notably with Xolo Maridueña in Blue Beetle and Iñaki Godoy in One Piece live-action. Through interviews, we examine how these actors proudly carry their ethnicity, providing much-needed light and authenticity to their characters.

Gentrification vs. Latinidad in The Bronx and East LA

By Aarón Flores and Saleen De La Cruz

Video: https://youtu.be/z7CTMgIsB0A?si=jesGMWnNCKEnw-cs

Inspired by our hometowns, The Bronx and East LA, we aim to delve into the preservation of Latinidad amidst an uptick in gentrification. Our project combines a video featuring original images that capture the essence of Latino culture amidst gentrification in our neighborhoods, as well as an art piece consisting of block letters spelling ‘L-A-T-I-N-I-D-A-D,’ adorned with our best photographs. Through a blend of visual and auditory elements, we intend to portray the resilience of Latino communities against gentrification, showcasing their vibrant cultural preservation in the face of urban transformation.

Lucha y la perseverancia: An Insight on Immigration to the United States

Video:

By Jorge Mariño and Anees Mitri

Our film has us interviewing our grandparents about their experiences as immigrants to the United States, with the central focus being what it means to belong, not just to a home, but what it to a community as a whole. In addition, our interviews highlight the grievances they faced in their home countries, and the perilous journey of fleeing from oppressive government regimes. No two immigrant stories are the same, and we aim to emphasize the cross-cultural similarities and differences between our families while emphasizing that the experience of the immigrant involves sacrifice and bravery but can yield pride for one’s identity and the identity of others.

Hugo Amador is the current Opinion Editor for The Cornell Daily Sun’s 141st editorial board. For this exhibit, Hugo touched upon his editorial practice to explore the power within what he calls “the futile cycle” of language behind immigration policy, specifically DACA policy. In this short 3 minute Op-Doc (Opinion Documentary), the language and voice of political debates, the media, and policy makers is isolated and refined. From as early as the 1980’s to late 2022, this Op-Doc explores the individual diction among people discussing the contested DACA issue, illuminating the back-and-forth; the teetering; the futility behind words such “un-constitutional”, “human”, and “American” that has contributed to a standstill on effective immigration legislation. The language in politics, law, media is meant to help us — but at times has the power to send us into a chase with no end.

Embark on a flavorful journey into the heart of Cuban culture with “Elisa Y Nitza,” a homage to Nitza Villapol, also someone who is referred to as Cuba’s Julia Child. In this video, I delve into Nitza’s remarkable life, exploring her profound influence on Cuban cuisine and culture. Mirroring the charm of the “Julie & Julia” trailer, I weave a narrative that pays homage to Nitza’s legacy, embracing the vibrant personality and culinary brilliance she brought to the table. Join me in celebrating the enduring spirit of Nitza Villapol, bridging the gap between the comedic elements of “Julie & Julia” and the cultural resonance of the Cuban diaspora, a tribute to a culinary icon.
