Power and the Triadic Closure Principle
The hit Starz series, Power, is a story about a man who lets his past get in the way of a promising future with his loved ones. The protagonist, “Ghost,” lives a double life as the leader of the drug Empire in NYC and the owner of a not-so innocent club called Truth. Truth was supposed to be his means of escaping the dangerous drug enterprise, however, a series of events and people from his past put a halt in those plans.
Ghost is a family man with his wife, Tasha, and his two children Tariq and Raina. He gave his children everything they could ever ask for in the hopes that they would never have to suffer the way he did as a child. His best friend, Tommy, has been his ride or die throughout every milestone in his life. Tommy is the uncle to both Tariq and Raina as well as Tasha’s confidant. Tasha has her own best friend, Keisha, who is also considered a part of the family. Finally, the show introduces the character Angela — Ghost’s lover throughout the show. There is a strong network between each character in the show because even those who would’ve never befriended each other at some point end up doing so. For instance, the relationship between Tasha, Tommy and Keisha satisfies the Triadic Closure Principle which states that if node A is friends with node B and node C, both node B and C are bound to become friends themselves. Tasha represents node A while Tommy and Keisha both have an edge connecting to her. Although Tommy and Keisha are very good friends to Tasha, they were not too fond of each other in the first few seasons. As of recently, Tommy and Keisha were able to build a relationship with one another, thus proving how the two friends of one person end up being friends as well. Another example of the TCP is the network between Ghost, Angela and Tasha. Due to the turn of events between Ghost and Angela, it would be natural for Tasha to see Angela as an enemy than a friend. However, in the most recent season, Angela and Tasha were able to befriend one another for the sake of her family. In this case, Ghost is the node that connects to Angela and Tasha with an edge in between both characters.
