Google’s PageRank

We learned in class about PageRank and how it works. PageRank is an algorithm that can rank web pages based on sites that it links to as well as sites that link to it. This is how search engines like Google decide what web pages to give when a user asks a question. This is useful because it allows a search engine to figure out what sites are relevant or not. PageRank uses a recursive method of ranking authorities based on hubs, then hubs based on authorities, and vice versa until top web pages are found. This allows search engines to find relevant web pages based on their connections with other “relevant.”

This article talks about Google’s PageRank and also UR. Google has a patent for their PageRank and nobody actually knows how it exactly works because how links and such are weighted is not easily available. Their PageRank used to be public on every page, which led to people selling webpages they owned with a high PageRank rating. Google has recently removed this from their site. Google’s PageRank is the best of any search engine, with an inferior rival being URL rating. Google has not made its PageRank algorithm public since 2000, so it has definitely changed and been improved since then. It is interesting to see the evolution of Google’s PageRank considering how efficient and complex it is.
