The Kardashians and Triadic Closure
Keeping Up With the Kardashians is an American reality TV show that highlights the Kardashian/ Jenner family’s ups and downs. The Kardashians/ Jenners are a prominent family among celebrities, and with that comes close friends as well as bad blood. Kim Kardashian is married to rapper Kanye West. At the 2009 Video Music Awards (VMAs) Kanye rudely interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech by saying, “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” This created a weak tie between Taylor and Kanye along with awkward tension considering Gigi Hadid and Taylor swift are close. Kendall Jenner (sister to Kim Kardashian) is also good friends with Gigi. The network below represents the strong and weak ties present among these relationships:
The property of Strong Triadic closure states that if a node A has edges to nodes B and C, then the B-C edge is very likely to form if A’s edges to. B and C are both strong ties. That being said, there are strong ties between Gigi and Kendall as well as Gigi and Taylor therefore it is more than likely that an edge will form between Taylor and Kendall. Given the conflict between Kim Kardashian, Kanye, and Taylor, it is also more than likely that this edge will be a negative tie considering Kendall is Kanye/Kim’s family. This would be an example of unbalanced triadic closure. Kanye, Kim, and Taylor would be an example of a balanced triadic closure. In addition, Kim and Taylor have two other mutual friends:
By including these two new nodes, Jennifer and Cara, and four new edges, all positive, two new unbalanced triadic closures are created as both triangles do not satisfy the structural balance property. The network as as whole is not balanced considering there are multiple closures that are unbalanced.
