Tagging Networks in Stack Exchange Communities

This is a paper from our Instructor Austin Benson that conducted a careful analysis of tagging networks in stack exchange communities. (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1902.02372.pdf)

The advance of network community has given rise to the appearance of many question answering system. Specifically, we have seen social media like quora and reddit where users could post questions and experience other users could post their answers. One example is Stack Exchange where tags of the question topics were assigned. In this paper, the authors proposed a simple generative model that creates random bipartite graphs of tags and questions. By doing so, the authors found the tag frequency distribution of each community. Surprisingly, they found that although each community is of different topics and evolves independently, the tagging behavior and structure and very similar. This fact introduced a behavior in social network in general rather than a feature of any specific network example.
