We are currently in what may be considered the heart of the common cold and flu season. The common cold and flu epidemic is one that can spread rapidly and with it being flu and cold season it is much easier spread while being in a confined environment such as a college campus where individuals are introduced to the same germs on a consistent basis. The article states “ the common cold is a highly contagious acute viral infection of the upper respiratory system…” There have been strategies in which the virus has tried to be contained but undoubtedly there seems to be a break out in the virus every year because of exactly how fast the virus is spread between the months of August and April.
Throughout the course we have touched on the topics of epidemics and how things have spread from one individual to another and whether or not they will be affected by the change. I believe the flu and common cold can directly relate to our topic about epidemics because it is one the fasts moving and changing things that people encounter. In class we have touched on the topic of epidemics and how the number of individuals contacts can be represented as the number of nodes in which they have. Epidemics are able to be seen through networks and the research can be used to the advantage of researchers.
