How to Get the Most out of PageRank and Boost Rankings

Article: distilled.net/resources/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-pagerank-and-boost-rankings/

The article discusses Google’s search algorithm called PageRank and suggests ways that a webpage can increase their ranking. This algorithm was based and determined the authority of  a page based on inbound links. Authorities are some nodes linked by good hubs and good authorities are pointed to by many hubs. The article continues to discuss how Google calculated a specific rank, explaining how the calculation would divide the value of a page held and split the value between all the pages it links to. Mesherghi states, that in theory, “a page that has attained quality inbound links and is well linked to internally, has a much better chance of outranking a page that has very little inbound or internal links pointing to it”. The author also continues by stating that unimportant pages are not beneficial to the PageRank, since the value is shared and thus this unimportant page is ranked. In conclusion, the author makes the claim that PageRank is still an influential ranking system and is still relevant to boost organic search visibility.

After learning about web networking, this article is related to many things that we are discussing such as authorities and inlinks. Google’s algorithm, which was also discussed in class includes inlinks as a factor to compute the rank of a page. As discussed in lecture, Google needs to “crawl” the web to index all of its information and structure. Hubs are pages that point to many pages with lots of inlinks and an authority is nodes linked to by good hubs. Usually, good authorities are pointed to by many hubs and good hubs points to many authorities. Google has a hard situation and problem to resolve because there are queries with many good answers and the results could potentially be biased. Additionally, a lot of websites have tactics to make their rank higher since irrelevant links are not helpful for PageRank and there are a couple of potential strategies and things to avoid. In general, this article is relevant to our discussion of web networking and information networks in lecture and provides new insight about the complexity and basics of a search algorithm ranking.
