Google, PageRank, and the Future

This article talks about Google’s efforts in constantly revising and adding to its highly profitable search methods. Google enlists the use of Ad and Page ranking in order to optimize search engine results as well as maximize profitability and exposure for themselves and advertisers. However, they are planning an overhaul of their search engine capabilities that relies heavily mobile user friendliness and AI integration. These features are intended to enhance personalization for mobile users, show more relevant ads, and minimize the number of necessary apps or steps required for users to do certain things.

I did not even realize, until reading this article, that PageRank was a Google exclusive algorithm, and that they purchased the license to use the algorithm from Stanford University. As we have discussed in class, PageRank is an algorithm that attempts to determine page quality based on pages linking to and from it, and the quality of those pages as well. It is interesting to me that we are able to understand the basic premise that powered Google’s search engine, which is such an incredibly important part of the modern internet. Obviously, the tools and algorithms that go into Google’s search engine are far more expansive and complex nowadays, but the fact that something seemingly “simple” could be built upon so extensively is incredible.
