What is Reverse SEO?

Reverse Search Engine Optimization is used when an individual or organization wants to lower the search engine visibility of a web page that they do not control, like negative online reviews or content. According to the above article, “there are two basic ways of doing this: removal and suppression. Completely removing negative online content is, of course, the most effective way of making sure no one ever sees the objectionable content”. However, this may be difficult if not impossible, especially if the content in question is not illegal or the owner is unknown or unwilling to remove the content. Even if the content is illegal, it may be prohibitively expensive or time-consuming to have it removed. In this case, Reverse SEO is the most effective and fastest way to bury unwanted pages by creating and modifying positive content to have higher PageRank.

The tactics involved in Reverse SEO all involve boosting the PageRank of existing, positive content and creating new positive content with high PageRank. First, new content will show up with low PageRank as it is not widely linked to. However, as the number of pages grow and links are created to the desired content, PageRank will increase and suppress unwanted pages. New content also includes social media profiles and posts on sites like Facebook or Twitter, as even these will show up in searches and have the added benefit of being pre-established and popular sites. In addition, existing pages can be modified to perform better with PageRank through SEO. Adding links to new content and other updates to older pages will boost PageRank. Finally, one can also pay to promote articles and pages so they appear higher in searches.

Reverse SEO is essentially boosting the PageRank of content that an individual or organization owns and controls over content that it doesn’t. Reverse SEO will not only suppress old negative content but will also make it harder for new negative content to surpass established pages. These methods are often used by governments, companies, and individuals in order to educate or mislead the public.
