Facebook’s Algorithm for News Feed

Just like how Google has a ranking system for its search result, the widely used social media platform Facebook has a ranking system for the News Feed posts. Facebook wants to choose the best content out of several thousand potential posts to put on your News Feed. How do they go on about ranking these posts?

Though the algorithm is always changing and takes into account thousands of different signals to personalize your News Feed for each user, there are 4 important factors. First is Author — the more you have you have interacted with the author, the more likely that Facebook will think the post is relevant to you. Next is Engagement — the more other people engaged with the post, the better the content. There is Type of Post — if it’s the type of content such as photos, videos, events that you like, Facebook will push that content on your feed. Lastly, there is Recency — the more recent it is, the more likely you will see it on your feed.

Combining these factors together, each post gets a score and gets ranked onto your feed. This personalization is what makes Facebook an amazing platform for people to stay connected with their friends and family.
