How artists find success through SoundCloud

Three Reasons Why SoundCloud *Is* Helping Artist Careers…

This article describes how SoundCloud helps artists advance their careers. The first way that SoundCloud helps artists is that SoundCloud helps individuals discover new music since it is a platform for up and coming artists rather than established artists (which is the case for Spotify). This also provides an avenue for record labels, music producers, and other artists to find an artists’ work and work together on collaborations or remixes. The second way that SoundCloud helps artists is that SoundCloud indirectly can help an artist make money through buy links on the artists’ page. The third way that SoundCloud helps artists is that it lets the world listen to an artists’ music since SoundCloud doesn’t restrict usage of their application based on an individual’s location.

As a user of SoundCloud, I believe that SoundCloud mainly appeals to artists because it allows them to collaborate more easily with other established artists and producers. This in turn increases an artists’ success since if artist A collaborates with artist B then, religious listeners of artist A will listen to the collaboration song and in turn will also listen to B. Essentially, a collaboration allows for fans of a single artist to listen to the other artists as well. Additionally, SoundCloud enables a listener to discover an artist’s collaborations with other artists and producers through its intelligent shuffle algorithm. When your playlist or song is done, the algorithm chooses the next song based on the artists you currently listen to and related artists or genres. This can make a fan of one artist easily find a similar artist that they like.

I believe that this article relates to the concept of strong and weak ties. In this analogy we can assume that a strong tie exists between an artist and a fan if the fan listens to a large amount of this artist’s music. We can also assume that a strong tie exists between two artists if they make a collaborative project together. There is a weak tie between an fan and an artist if the fan listens to a moderate amount of an artist’s music. In this case, we can show how collaborations on SoundCloud help artists’ careers. Assume that artist A did a collaboration with artist B. This means that hardcore fans of artist A will listen to the artist A and artist B collaboration and vice-versa for hardcore fans of artist B. As expected, a weak tie forms between a hardcore fan or artist A and artist B since the fan listened to artist B’s song. This increases artist B and artist A’s exposure to listeners and makes them even more successful. As a result, the fact that SoundCloud’s collaborative platform can make artists more successful can be supported by the concept of strong and weak ties.
