Thankful for Advertisements on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States. Each year, millions of Americans gather with family and friends to give thanks for what they have. The holiday is often closely associated with such events as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and professional football games. These events are noted for their popularity so it is no surprise that these events bring increased advertisements as well. Recently, there has been a large amount of commentary on the types of marketing strategies in place. For example, just yesterday on Thanksgiving, Verizon used Snapchat as a base for advertising. Large corporations are continuing to create new ways of branding themselves both on the Internet and television. Advertisements during NFL games on Thanksgiving Thursday are seen by millions of viewers. Likewise, each day millions of people use the Web. Between these two technologies alone, marketers can reach a large percentage of the population.

The spread of information through a network is not just a result of the marketer’s success but can also be attributed to the relationships people have with each other. Information can be transferred between individuals in many ways. One way is through social network outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Communication networks, specifically, are the means in which messages can be transmitted through computers or media devices. Another means of transferring information depends on how connected people are within their own networks. The breadth of message travel depends on how embedded a specific person is in his or her network. Furthermore, specific powerful individuals within a network can have an impact on the spread of information. These individuals can influence others to follow them and promote certain types of advertisements. Kim Kardashian is one notable example. This celebrity has the power to wield many Americans to follow in her footsteps; people are willing to purchase items that have been endorsed by her as well as other celebrities. These celebrities can create an information cascade and can possibly result in a significant portion of the population supporting a certain production or message. All that is necessary is that one powerful individual support a particular advertisement.

Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to boost marketing strategies because people are beginning their holiday shopping and are looking for what items to purchase. The use of advertisements on popular media is an easy way to relay information to a large number of people at a single time. The effects of networks and the increased number of interactions of people in recent years has been extremely useful to how advertisers strategically market their products. It has become easier for a larger population to gain access to what is placed both on the Internet and television.
