Which Social Network Does Your Target Customer Use

In the article “Which Social Network Does Your Target Customer Use?”, the writer discusses the age and gender segmentation variable that is involved in using different forms of social media. I believe this is an interesting article because I remember reading elsewhere that the highest users of Farmville are middle aged stay-at- home mothers. It was a shock to me when I first read that, so this article is interesting because points out certain facts that people might have not known. For example, over 55% of Twitter users are older than 35, the youngest users (age 24) use DevianArt, and Linkedin had the highest percentage of users over the age of 55. Then from gender segmentation, there are more females on the social media sites unless there is a high focus on politics or technology.

This article connects to the discussions in class regarding Social Networks. Looking at different graphs in class, we discussed being connected to friends and how strong/ weak a connection was. The article brought up a different question in mind: What if we analyzed the data and create graphs based on age or gender? It would be interesting to study how the connections would form and see if there are underlying patterns to study. There could be applications of the strong triadic property and the balancing of the graphs to a network labeled by age and gender.
