Google and Apple are on the Outs, YouTube feels strain—What about us?

Two of the most powerful technology companies in the world, Google and Apple, certainly have not had the smoothest relationship, especially as they compete in the Smartphone market.  According to CNN, Apple has been taking on makers of Android-powered Smartphones in courts around the world over patent disputes, and it finally announced in June that it would no longer use Google Maps to power the iPhone or iPad’s Maps app.  The instability of this marred relationship has finally affected Apple’s relationship with YouTube.  Owned by Google, YouTube maintains its reign as one of the most popular social sites, reaching four billion daily video views a day.  Unfortunately, Apple announced in August that it would not be including the YouTube app by default in the new iPhones, and it is considered by many to be Apple’s latest attempt to extricate itself from Google’s products and services.

While breaking a tie is hardly a positive experience, we recognize that it restores stability to the network—but that is not the only benefit.  YouTube suffered, in a sense, from their partnership with Apple.  Under the Apple umbrella, the YouTube app was rarely updated or modified since its creation, quickly becoming obsolete and an ineffective product for users.  Additionally, Apple refused to allow the app to stream videos with ads in it, limiting the user overwhelmingly.  While the possibility exists that YouTube may find mobile use, which currently makes up 25% of total domain use, drop for the next few months, YouTube is looking forward optimistically to the opportunity to have full functionality of its app.  Fortunately for the users, the app is now only a free download away.  Only time will tell if this additional task of now having to download the app will significantly affect mobile use.
