Production of cannabinoids
Cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming very popular as a supplement for the relief of seizures, pain, and anxiety. It is made in trichomes of female flowers as a biochemical alternative to THC.
Locations and production methods
We are testing cultivars in two small plot trials on Cornell research farms in Geneva and Ithaca and also a subset of 7 cultivars in a greenhouse. Plants were established from seed in 4” pots on June 7, then were transplanted to raised beds with plastic mulch and drip irrigation on July 6 (Ithaca) and July 9 (Geneva). Males are being actively removed as they flower.
Flowering time and plant architecture
Some lines have autoflowered – they are daylength insensitive. Others started flowering in early August, while ‘Otto II’ has still not flowered. We are assessing height vs. branching as a measure of plant architecture.
Harvest yield and quality assessment
We will harvest whole plants and air dry them in a greenhouse. Cannabinoids will be analyzed from flower buds and from whole plants for each plant to determine regulatory levels and whole plant yields, and compare field with greenhouse production for a subset of cultivars.
