Week 8: July 24th – July 28th
Welcome back to my eighth week of working with the CUCE-NYC CHAT Initiative! This Monday, I taught the Breukelen youths lessons two and three. Although it was a little rough due to the time constraints and the fact that the ingredients were not ordered due to an emergency, I was able to remain flexible and buy the necessary items at the nearby grocery store while replacing tahini with peanut butter. Overall, the youths were very excited to participate in the lesson, clearly remembered the lesson from last week, and were very eager to help out with the recipes. Even with the changes to the recipes, the youths really loved the Color Black Bean Salad and the Hummus with Veggies and Pita and were willing to make it at home! Additionally, I noted that when the children were too energetic, it was helpful to cut out the active games and refer to the ground rules we established—especially “one mic.” Nevertheless, since our session on Friday was canceled due to the extreme heat waves, I spent the rest of the week organizing our Box files and Drive. Next week, I look forward to teaching lessons four, five, and six!
