Week 7th: July 17th – July 21st
Welcome back to my seventh week of working with the CUCE-NYC CHAT Initiative, when we are finally teaching the youths at the PAL sites! Although I was supposed to go to PAL Breukelen on Monday, I was notified that they would be working at Guy R Brewer Boulevard in Queens due to construction at their original site. However, when Miriam and I arrived at their Queens site, we were told that the Breukelen youths who were supposed to participate with CHAT were unable to arrive due to logistical issues. Unfortunately, this meant that I had to push back lesson one, and we noted the necessity of calling Breukelen and the PAL director Marie before going to the site. Fortunately, on Friday morning, I was notified that the Breukelen youths would be staying at their original site for the rest of the CHAT lessons. With Breukelen’s group leader Shaniya, we were able to teach fifteen youths from grades four to seven lesson one, fill out the pre-surveys necessary to assess the effectiveness of CHAT, and take attendance of everyone. Overall, this week was a little stressful due to the last minute updates and improvisation, but I learned to remain flexible as these issues tend to arise quite often.
