Starting on Friday, customers at Cornell Orchards retail store will be able to buy SnapDragon™ apples, one of a pair of much-anticipated new varieties from the Cornell breeding program.

SnapDragon™ is the offspring of Honeycrisp and an apple in the breeding program with fruit similar to Jonagold. The apples have consistent quality and great firmness, with good sugar levels and low to moderate acidity.

Their spicy-sweet flavor was big hit with taste testers.

SnapDragon™ is available only to members of the New York Apple Growers (NYAG), LLC, through an exclusive licensing agreement with Cornell. Members pay acreage fees and royalties on trees purchased and fruit produced, which are used to support marketing and apple breeding. For more information, contact: Robin Leous, NYAG Business Manager, at nyapples@hotmail.com or (585) 478-4288.

Coming to Cornell Orchards later this season: RubyFrost™ — the other new apple variety released by Cornell this year.

  1. I live close to an apple orchard and I’m always in awe by the beauty of the apples when I walk by. This SnapDragonTM looks delicious, though. Congrats on this apple breeding achievement 🙂

A bit sad to read that I’ll probably never get to try it here in Germany.
