New! British Records on the Atlantic World

CUL recently added a new digital resource of interest to faculty and students in many different areas.  It is British Records on the Atlantic World. The resource consists of 12 collections of manuscript material found in England.  Cornell was one of only a few institutions in the U.S. to have copies of the collections on microfilm; now we have access to the digitized copies as well.

The collection includes materials such as journals, correspondence, official records, personal papers, and printed books from over a two hundred year period, all related to British involvement in the Atlantic region, including both Africa and the Americas.  It has a wealth of information about Britain’s colonization, commercial, missionary and even literary relations with Africa and the Americas. Alongside the records of Liverpool merchants involved in the infamous Triangular Trade, there are those of slave plantation owners, of early Anglican missionaries, and of naval and customs officials.  The most recent addition is a collection relating to Dr. Bray and includes material on the establishment and running of “Negro Schools” and in their grants of library books. A 13th collection, the “Collected papers of the Bolton Whitman Fellowship,” which consists of lengthy correspondence over many years of a group of nobodies from Lancashire with Walt Whitman, will be added soon.

• pt. 4. Jamaican materials in the Slebech papers
• pt. 5. Papers relating to the Jamaican estates of the Goulburn family of Betchworth
• pt. 6. Papers of the Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies, 1694-1709
• pt. 7. Journal, annual sermons and reports of the SPG, 1701-1870
• pt. 8. South American Missionary Society records, 1844-1919
• pt. 9. Liverpool street and trade directories, 1766-1900
• pt. 10. Early colonial and missionary records for West Africa
• pt. 11. West Indies material in the archives of the USPG, 1710-1950
• pt. 12. Archives of the Associates of Dr. Bray to 1900.
