NY State Census volumes
From 1790 to 1821, the state of New York conducted six censuses of electors, separate from the U.S. Federal census. Starting in 1825 until 1925, the state conducted its own census of inhabitants. The Library has many, but not all, of the printed statistical reports prepared from these censuses.
Recently the New York State Library digitized all of the statistical reports in its holdings and made them freely available from its “New York State Census” page. Note that these are printed summaries; the original returns with names are found on microfilm at the State Library.
The digitized statistical reports are page images of the published volumes. Much of the data has been entered into machine-readable form in the database “Electoral and Demographic Data for New York, 1830-1875,” prepared by Lee Benson and Joel Silbey, and available through CISER from ICPSR.
