Cornell Gamelan Ensemble joins Tacet(i)
In another foray into the experimental, the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble joins the Thai new music ensemble Tacet(i), for the final concert of their week-long residency at Cornell. The program, titled “Transcending Tradition,” explores intersections and commonalities between a number of seemingly unrelated musical worlds. The members of Tacet(i) will play both their usual instruments (clarinet, saxophone, trombone, cello, and guitar) and invented instruments, as well as gamelan. The Cornell Gamelan Ensemble will play a new arrangement of Jack Neiberg’s “What You Do” along with a more expansive piece in the post-rock mold, integrating traditional gamelan idioms into a rock-adjacent aesthetic. Both ensembles will join in on each others’ sets, adding improvised layers that simultaneously evoke sonic identities and transgress boundaries. For a sense of what to expect, check out Tacet(i)’s “Collective of Resonation” and Neiberg’s “What You Do.”
