Hurricane Sandy made landfall Monday evening, October 29. The New York City metropolitan area was among the hardest hit, flooding most of the city and outlying areas. President Obama declared a major disaster in New York City and Long Island.  As a result, federal funding will be available for residents of the area. The transportation systems in downstate New york have experienced unprecedented  damage and are expecting lengthy delays in restoring service.

Upstate New York was spared for the most part; some localized flooding and downed trees due to high winds were reported, with pockets of electrical outages.
