Food requirements
These flies on banana or banana Opuntia food. The Opuntia powder can be omitted and the flies will still do quite well. Generally, S. latifasciaformis is easier to grow than members of the victoria group.
Temperature
18 – 25°C is the range they will grow at. They grow slower at the lower temperatures. Embryo to adult will take 20 to 30 days depending upon the temperature and the species.
Pupation conditions
In order to pupate, the addition of paper along the side of the vial when there are many larvae present is helpful.
