Addressing flood and community resiliency our team is collaborating with Rust2Green Binghamton this semester to address a vacant terrain on the edge of the Rock Bottom dam in Binghamton, NY. Located on the northern edge of the Susquehanna river the site expresses itself as a natural extension of the existing Haudenosaunee River Trail Park and currently accommodates recreational uses for to the neighborhoods in its vicinity. Its access, however, is severed by dated flood and transportation infrastructure and poses a number of safety concerns. Reminiscent of the river’s important role in Binghamton’s early history, this workshop will address the community’s physical and social connection with the Susquehanna river. Design Connect hopes to promote this objective through the application of design thinking principles through participatory design workshops and the exhibition of visual and mapping aids produced in the process.
