DEA 3030 Materials for Design and Sustainability
A sustainable approach to the evaluation and selection of materials and finishes for creating products and places for people has the potential to ensure the future survival of our planet. This course provides an introduction to basic material properties and asks students to morph the materials sensibilities, understand performance testing, building codes, and formulate a life-cycle cost analysis. Emphasis on “green” methodologies and assessment, including LEED building rating systems.
Learning Outcomes
Understand the limits of a material and its unlimited possibilities (innovate in research, design or practice).
Critically assess a material’s life cycle, from resource extraction to end-of-life or cradle-to-cradle potential (think critically, direct own learning).
Create and present visual/verbal research on current sustainable products as a member of a presentation team (work effectively with others, write, speak, and use communications effectively).
