The Physical Education department at Cornell really offers a unique opportunity to students. Yeah, you’re required to take two P.E. classes to graduate, but nobody that I’m aware of has complained about the requirement. Instead, most people–including myself–look at it as a fun way to refine your athletic skills or learn something new. I mean, when else in your lifetime are you going to get the opportunity for college credit in caving? Or tree climbing? (Click for course descriptions.)

This semester, for P.E. I’m doing P.E. 1395: Self Defense and Personal Safety in the Modern World. I know what you’re thinking…David! You’re menacing and scary enough! Nobody would dare mess with all 130 pounds of you unless they were insane!**

The class met for the first time yesterday, and it was a lot of fun. I already learned something–go ahead and try to grab me by the wrist, I dare you. I guarantee I could break free.

The instructor is this guy who has like  8 black belts and has taught for decades, so I think it’s safe to say he knows what he’s doing. It meets in Newman Arena in Bartels Hall, which is this huge athletic complex:

Anyways, the class should be a ton of fun and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve always wanted to shout “hiiya” like they do in martial arts movies, so this should be an appropriate place to do so.

**This is sarcasm. I know you know it is, but just making sure.
