Chromosomes – QTL

By Manuel Duarte

We all know that our genes code for various traits. On each chromosome, there are various loci. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) are DNA segments that are linked to genes that code for a quantitative trait. Whether you’re a genetics enthusiast, doing research on dairy cattle, or just browsing the site, you might find this section interesting. While this is not a complete database, it highlights production, conformation and health related traits and their respective QTL’s.   An example is shown below.

This figure shows the information seen on the image maps.  Whether you select production, conformation or health traits, you will be taken to an image map of the bovine chromosomes. Once there, you can hover over each one and a trait/characteristic will show, along with the exact location on the chromosome. References are also listed.
