Hi! i was just wondering what the consensus is now for WR 104 and its ability to create a dangerous gamma ray burst? its a spruce of anxiety for me and i cant seem to find a paper or article from the last few years about it . Im sorry if this has been answered i couldnt find it :)
Hello! That’s a very fair thing to be concerned about! It’s tough to say, but the main thing is that there is still about a million years or so left in the star’s lifespan. So, it’s not as if it is significantly more likely to explode compared to, say, a large asteroid hitting Earth. Also, if it were to explode soon, it is possible we would see rapid fluctuations or changes in the star as it nears that breaking point.
Another thing to consider is that we don’t know if its rotation axis is pointed directly at us for the gamma-ray jet to hit Earth. A recent paper (https://keckobservatory.org/pinwheel/) has just given evidence that the binary system has an inclined orbit, which may indicate that each star’s rotation is also inclined.
In all, I think we can rest easy knowing that this star likely won’t cause our demise!
