Provost New Faculty Fellow and Incoming Assistant Professor (2024), Jocelyn Poe, recently won the Don Schön Award for Excellence in Learning from Practice for her work on Theorizing Communal Trauma.
This prestigious award is given in memory of Donald Schön and in honor of his seminal work on the reflective nature of creative planning practice. Since 1998, this award has recognized a paper written for a graduate course in planning, a master’s thesis, or a research report which shows excellence in the writer’s personal and/or professional learning from practice and in the analysis of that learning.
Poe’s research focuses on communal trauma, reparative praxis and anti-racist futures. Inspired by her experiences as a practicing planner, Poe uses interdisciplinary and creative methods for theorizing planning practice and engaging communities. Her work resonates with critical issues of justice and equity which shape our cities and are deeply relevant to our field and its futures.
Poe feels honored and humbled to receive this award and hopes that her work influences research and practice and this award validates that impact. At Cornell, she looks forward to contributing to communal trauma theory and reparative praxis research through rich collaborative and teaching experiences.
After moving across the country from Los Angeles, she is excited to see all that Ithaca has to offer and is in the market for new hobbies!
