Applications for funding from the Clarence Stein Institute are open and can be submitted up until April 15th, 2018. The Department of City and Regional Planning (CRP) revamped its program honoring progressive planning icon Clarence S. Stein.
Grants are awarded to support research and community outreach projects by undergraduate and graduate students, to support research by advanced scholars (doctoral students, faculty members, and independent scholars), and for conservation and training at Stein-designed sites. The fellowship goes to a student in the Master of Regional Planning program, who will serve as the program administrator. Finally, the Stein Institute will fund an annual lecture in CRP.
The Stein Institute is based in the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University. Grant recipients are welcome from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban history, historic preservation, and city and regional planning, and the research supported by the Stein Institute encompass both urban and suburban development. The programs of the institute include opportunities for a graduate fellowship within the Master of Regional Planning program, an annual lecture, research grants for senior scholars as well as students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and support for the Stein Collection in the Cornell University archives. This collection is one of an extensive set of Cornell collections on major figures in city and regional planning, and attracts researchers from all over the world, and is currently documented on the Stein Papers in the Rare and Manuscript Collection in the Carl A. Kroch Library.
Created in 1994 with an endowment provided by Aline Laveen MacMahon Stein, the Clarence S. Stein Institute for Urban and Landscape Studies supports the research, teaching, and community service of students and faculty who have demonstrated an interest in the ideas of Clarence Stein as expressed in his book, Toward New Towns for America (Reinhold, 1957).
