The department of City and Regional Planning is co-sponsoring a panel discussion on the work inspired by Grace Lee Boggs and environmental justice, as part of the Grace Lee Boggs Month celebration.
This workshop aims to learn from Grace’s visionary organizing, while sharing similar work being done right here in Ithaca and Tompkins County.
Dr. Judith Barker, former IC Sociology professor and active leader in the Ithaca Community Gardens will share a little about how Grace has inspired her work, and the current struggles taking place as ICG fights to keep their land and builds a space that increases food access and sustainability.
Sarah Gotowka, textile artist and owner of Luna Fiber Studio and Earth Grown Shades will discuss her work teaching sustainable textile and natural dye practices in collaboration with Remembrance Farm. She also works with youth on healing through art.
Finally, Rafa Aponte, owner of Rocky Acres Farm, Director of the Youth Farm Project, and Outreach Specialist at Groundswell, will talk about his work at the intersection of food and racial justice. This work combes the spirit of activism with the transformative healing aspects of nature.
After the panel and discussion, we will have a bean sprout growing activity. (All materials will be provided.)
Please join us as we learn about efforts in Tompkins County for racial, food, and environmental justice. We hope to think together on the question Grace left us, “How do we grow our Souls?” while attempting to “bring the neighbor back to the hood!”
