Another important goal of this project involves retrieving, synthesizing, and analyzing legacy data from the 19th-century excavations. Despite the limits of excavation and recording protocols of that period, the important work of Penelope Allison (e.g., Allison 2004) has demonstrated the value and potential of “archival archaeology” at Pompeii. We will thus research the archives of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Pompei (SAP) for records of the early excavations, as well as any records or photographs attesting to alterations to the site after the 19th-century excavations.
