The 2025 Pets and Vets 101 took place on Sunday, March 9th at the Newton Community Center in Newton, CT. This event is put on by the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation.
Llamas, chickens and goats, oh my! Animal lovers, are you ready? It’s time for the sanctuary’s spring favorite – PETS & VETS 101! For the last ten years, PETS & VETS 101 has been celebrating the animals we cherish while bringing together the top veterinary and animal rescue experts in the state. A rare and unique opportunity to meet the animals in person and learn their individual care requirements. Whether you’re looking to inspire a budding veterinarian, adopt a new companion animal, add to your friendly farm or simply want to learn more about your favorite domestic animals, PETS & VETS.
Dr. Lena DeTar, Associate Clinical Professor of Shelter Medicine with Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program (MSMP) traveled to Newton with two Cornell University veterinary students (Kelly Maffei, 3rd year and Katelyn Yockey, 2nd year) to table and share her knowledge and passion for shelter medicine at this event.
This is DeTar’s fifth year in attending Pets and Vets 101. When asked what her favorite part is, DeTar said, “I love getting to know the Cornell vet students better, seeing our friends who run the Foundation, and engaging with the kids who are so eager to play and learn.”
The Hubbard Foundation also helps to fund four veterinary students interested in shelter medicine in each of Cornell’s four class years with scholarship money.
