Dr. Aly Cohen is no stranger to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Having been with Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program during 2020, she is returning to assist Dr. Lena DeTar and Dr. Erin Henry with clinical coverage and teaching at the SPCA of Tompkins County as Dr. Elizabeth Berliner moves to her new position at the ASPCA.
Cohen is a master at wearing many hats. She is currently an Extension Associate for the new Cornell Margaret and Richard Riney Canine Health Center, serves as a temporary locum for Primary Care Surgery with Small Animal Community Practice and is also the contract veterinarian at the Binghamton Zoo.
When asked about what it’s like to juggle several different positions in different specialties, Cohen states:
I feel like it actually helps me be a better vet, first and foremost, moving between the roles. So much of animal health is wanting to be the top trusted source for pet owners or any animal lover. It might be picking a random topic and then deep diving and seeing what’s the latest research or literature out on this and sharing it with people looking for information. Moving between clinics and my work at the Riney Canine Health Center keeps me fresh in that way, and gives me off time to study new material and then compile it in a way that’s digestible for owners.
Cohen is excited to get back to teaching and connecting with shelter medicine again. She says:
What a shelter vet gets to do is what every vet wants to do, which is make a difference in an animal’s life. And you really do get to do that in some capacity every day at the shelter.
Welcome back! 🙂
