The 2022 ASPCA Cornell Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Conference took place on July 15-17 at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

This is the 19th year of this annual conference organized as a collaborative effort between the ASPCA, Cornell CVM, and the Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell, and financially supported by the ASPCA and Maddie’s® Fund. This was the first time the conference has taken place in-person since 2019 due to the pandemic. However, the sessions will also be offered on demand after the conference in order to be sure to reach as broad an audience as possible, including those who could not travel this year.

There were a total of 306 conference attendees from across the nation. Hot topics included:

  • A two-day behavior track full of research and practical information
  • Providing clinical cardiology on a budget
  • Providing local anesthesia blocks, including a presentation and hands-on laboratory
  • Balancing medical and behavioral needs of shelter animals
  • Engaging in emergency fostering

The keynote address featured Dr. Sheila (D’Arpino) Segurson, (Maddie’s® Fund) who discussed “Lessons Learned as a Shelter Veterinary Behaviorist: The Evolution of Behavior in Shelters.”

Dr. Elizabeth Berliner, Janet L. Swanson Director of Shelter Medicine; Associate Clinical Professor
