TNR of free-roaming dogs is highly unusual in the Northeast US. However, in some rural areas community members may have unsocialized dogs who are free-roaming on their rural properties.  Recently, the SPCA of Tompkins County, with support from Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program (MSMP), held a rare dog Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) for a local community member to help reduce reproduction among the unsocialized dogs on his property for which he provides daily care.

Dr. Erin Henry, Assistant Clinical Professor of Shelter Medicine, led the TNR project in collaboration with humane investigators at the SPCA.  MSMP interns Drs. Lopez Goicochea and Pow performed the surgeries with the expert anesthesia and handling assistance of Kelsey Arrison, LVT.

The MSMP team is committed to assisting the community with TNR initiatives whenever possible. Fostering community-based collaborations promotes the best possible health and welfare for the animals in the area, especially given limited options for relocation or adoption of unsocialized dogs and cats. These projects are winners across the board for trainees, communities, and animals. All dogs were safely returned home, altered and with preventive care including vaccinations.
