We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Kristen Pow, the Janet L. Swanson Shelter Medicine Intern, has accepted a full-time position with Toronto Humane Society in Ontario, Canada. Pow is excited to join a team that offers low-cost spay and neuter, dental care, and other low-cost wellness services.
Before Pow heads into her new position, she will participate in wellness outreach clinics at various remote locations in Ontario, at the end of May. At these clinics, vaccinations and other health preventative services will be offered to the animals and their community.
Pow credits her internship experience with Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program in preparing her for shelter medicine practice. She was excited to receive multiple job offers, reflecting both how the field is growing and the benefits of specialty training. Pow says the program allowed her to hone her skills as a surgeon and practitioner and that “the learning was endless and will continue my entire career.”
Some of her favorite aspects from the internship were the people. “I think we’re very fortunate to learn from some of the best and to work with an amazing team at the SPCA of Tompkins County.” Pow also enjoyed the various clinical rotations she was able to participate in throughout the year: Dermatology, Exotics, and Emergency and Critical Care, to name a few.
Pow plans on continuing to develop her skills and love for surgery. She also has an interest in exploring additional training in forensics. “Thank you to everybody at the program. I loved my year here and I’ll miss everyone like crazy.”
FUN FACT:
Dr. Pow adopted her dog Indie from the SPCA of Tompkins County during her internship experience and also loved fostering a few medical cases throughout the year.
