Dr. Lila Miller, a graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, received the 2021 Avanzino Leadership Award for her life-saving work and 42 years of service in the field of veterinary shelter medicine.
Although Miller did not always have an easy road to success, she had always dreamed of being a doctor for animals. With her perseverance and determination, Miller not only achieved her dream, but paved the way for so many looking to enter this field.
From running one of the most profitable ASPCA clinics in Brooklyn, NY when there were no significant veterinary services in many of the other boroughs, to writing textbooks on shelter medicine when there were none, Miller has been a trailblazer for shelter medicine as well as for women and people of color in the veterinary profession.
Because of Miller’s notable achievements, every July 10th has been declared “Dr. Lila Miller Shelter Medicine Day.”
Watch Dr. Miller’s incredible candid conversation with Maddie’s® Fund, where she dives into how her career started and the tremendous challenges along the way.
