Back to Sperlonga: Early Rise, Morning Light

Photo taken by Kylie Corwin This time we set our alarms for 6:00 o’clock.

Our goal was to get the 7:27 train out of Roma Termini to Fondi-Sperlonga, arriving in the beach village at around 9 o’clock. We did this with success, the town was quiet and beautiful in the crisp morning air. The entire morning was spent swimming in the sea and gazing at the incredible landscape behind us. For the day we packed a lunch which consisted of apples, arugula and mortadella sandwiches.

After lunch we decided to venture off in search for a hidden jewel: The Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga. Peering from the sea, we discovered the natural cave in which the sculptures were originally housed. The cave is at the very far end of the beach, as well the museum which  currently houses the sculptures. The museum is a bit more difficult to find because it is tucked away behind trees and shrubs up a gravel road. The sculptures are engulfing. Some of my favorites include those from the famous Polyphemus Group and the Scylla Group. Anyone who is a lover of Homer’s epic poem: The Odyssey, must make their way to this museum. It is a wonderful place to spend your afternoon, especially after spending a morning bathing in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
