To many’s excitement, the first day, the first location we have visited on our first field trip was no other but the city of Milan. Having started off by dropping our luggage at our hotel, we have proceeded to visit some local development in which design, famous architects Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind have taken part.
Having well criticized and elaborated on the positives and negatives of such development, while inspecting both design approaches, we eventually headed towards the city center by the means of the local trams, which according to Prof. Blanchard have been in use not only in Milan but also in San Francisco, the city to which Milan has sold some of its extra models. Struck by the image of the Milan cathedral, we really have circulated through it, around and under it, and before we thought we were done exploring this building, we were running up the hundreds of stairs leading to the top of the roof.
A little dizzy, the payoff was a truly great view, from which a full panoramic view of the city was to be discovered. After having sketched for long enough and explored the details and various numerous sculptures of the cathedral, we have been given time for lunch.
After lunch and some more interesting sites, we have eventually arrived to the House of Memory, a building that many have been astonished by, for not only its simplicity but also it’s very good and surprisingly affordable design.
Having had the opportunity to talk to the architect of the building, we have received some inside knowledge of the structure and overall design approach, making the whole structure yet more striking important and memorable among the many sites visited. Passing by the Bosco Verticale, we eventually parted ways to all enjoy the evening and recuperate from the many kilometers walked while sketching and taking pictures. After personally having gotten coffee and some extra rest at the hotel, in a group of five we have departed for the famous Corso Como, known for its good bars and restaurants, at one of which we eventually stayed for some really good food and drinks. It is thus with full stomachs and in a happy mood that we have returned to the hotel to rest and prepare for the next day.
