We are the Cornell Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The ACS is an American federally-chartered, non-profit organization (Federal ID No. 53-0196572). References in this policy to “the Society” are to the American Chemical Society, and “we”, “us”, or “our” are to the local section specifically.

How Do You Use My Data?

When you become a member

When you become a member of the American Chemical Society, if you live in the area of our local section (roughly Tompkins county) we will gain access to information including your name, address, and email address, which you supplied to the Society.

We will only ever use this information to send infrequent emails detailing items of interest to members of the Society, in line with the policies of the Society for the use of email.

When you attend one of our educational sessions, sign-up for our webinars, or contact us directly

When you attend one of our educational sessions, short courses, workshops, (such as Short Courses Learning Management and Classroom sessions) webinars, or other events, or contact us directly, we may collect the following information from you: name, address, and employer/academic institution. This information will be used only to understand expected attendance, and to determine demographic information which may help us design improved content in the future.

Children’s Guidelines:

The Society (www.acs.org) meets the guidelines of TRUSTe’s Children’s program.

Where Is My Data Stored? How Long is it Retained?

The Society ultimately hosts your data. Its privacy policy is available at https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/privacy.html. The local section will obtains new data monthly for its membership, along with instructions from the society about e.g. who to remove from email lists. Thus, when your data is removed from the Society, it will be removed from the Local section within a month.

Your Right To Object Under Data Protection Laws

Depending on your location, you may have the right to object to us handling your personal information when:

  • we are handling your personal information based on our legitimate interests (as described in the “How do you use my data” section above). If you ask us to stop handling your personal information in this way, we will stop unless we can show you that we have compelling grounds as to why our use of your personal information should continue; or
  • for marketing purposes. If you ask us to stop handling your personal information on this basis, we will stop. We will then only hold very limited data about you to make sure we do not contact you again.
