One of the major goals of the Cornell ACS is to support and advance the chemical sciences in our area. One of the best ways we can do this is by helping to provide funding to get projects up and off the ground, support students in interacting with the wider community, and help the community come together in other ways. We are going to begin accepting requests for funding. We imagine providing a small number of awards each year in the following categories:
- Undergraduate Conference Grant – we understand that it can be very challenging for undergraduate students to travel to regional or national conferences. We anticipate granting ~four awards per year of ~$500 to students who intend to present at an appropriate conference to help offset costs. As part of your application, please include the abstract for your poster or talk.
- Small Meeting Initiation Awards – there are very few ways to replace personal interactions in science. Even after the pandemic, and with the advent of Zoom and Teams and the like, there’s just nothing quite like getting a group of people into a room to talk about a topic of interest. Are you interested in organizing a meeting to talk about the latest FDA approved drugs, new analytical techniques, historical approaches to chemistry, or some other relevant topic? We’d love to help you get your first few meetings off the ground. These could be on or off campus, depending on what you’re going after. Please include in your application the number of people you expect, whether the meeting would be open to the public, how you plan to advertise, and what you plan to spend money on (space, refreshments, etc.)
- New Demonstration/Display Award – Are you a teacher who’d really love to show off a cool experiment to your class, but you need new glassware, or some basic safety equipment, or to replenish a chemical? Do you want to put together some sort of display you can bring out on Mole Day each year? Or maybe you want to get some good quality STEM toys for your Kindergarten to get the kids started in the right direction? Let us know how we can help. Please include the details of what you want to get, the age group you would plan to target, and how many days/months/years you expect the items to remain useful.
- Other/Unsolicited – Do you have an idea that we haven’t thought of? It wouldn’t be the first time! Feel free to let us know how we can help. If it fits in our mission, we’ll do the best we can.
